Chromatic bass line

Three or more consecutive bass notes moving by semitone in the same direction, often using slash chords to create a smooth descending or ascending line.

35
songs
It is heard on 35 recordings, for nearly the whole run, 1963 to 1970. Lennon's 'Do You Want to Know a Secret' came first and Harrison's 'I Me Mine' last, with the Magical Mystery Tour album leaning on it hardest, seven of its eleven tracks. Nineteen of the 34 come from 1967 and 1968, and only six from everything after, the peak closing with 'Honey Pie'. The singing splits John on fifteen, Paul on fourteen and George on four. Lennon and McCartney reach for it at the same rate, 17% and 16% of their own songs.
