With a Little Help from My Friends

1967 · Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

“What would you think if I sang out of tune?”

A Lennon-McCartney composition written specifically as Ringo's lead-vocal showcase for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The verses unfold as a call-and-response between Ringo and his bandmates, segued from the title track via crowd noise.

What is unique about this song?

The record came from Lennon and McCartney jointly, rather than from one of them. Cowbell are something Lennon played here and nowhere else. Six Beatles records show the mark of gospel, 'Hey Jude' and 'The Long and Winding Road' among them, and this one is the earliest.

Some of it is put as a question (Verses built on rhetorical questions), and the lyric touches the motifs of smoking and friendship, most common in the Beatles' 1968 songs. It uses anaphora (choruses begin 'I get by / I get high / I'm gonna try'). A curiosity, the title is unusually long.

A pop and rock song with gospel influences (antiphonal call-and-response vocal arrangement), 'With a Little Help from My Friends' sits in E major and moves at about 110 BPM. The tune carries call and response, a line thrown out and thrown back (backing voices ask, lead answers), something the Beatles had reached for on 'Baby It's You' 4 years earlier. Also, listen to a melodic bass (prominent meandering bassline). The chords run E → F♯m → B → E → C♯m, the same shape 'The Fool on the Hill' plays as D6 → Em7/D → A7 → D6 → Bm7.

Recorded over two all-night sessions at EMI Studio 2, with Ringo cajoled into singing his lead at dawn while the band stood around the mic for moral support. The Sonic Blue Fender Stratocaster was Harrison's guitar, most at home in their 1965 writing. They reached for the Ludwig Super Classic. Only five Beatles recordings reach for direct injection, and this is one. 1967 brought 25 songs, and this was the 12th of them, the 133rd record of their career.

McCartney and Lennon wrote it, and Starr sings lead. The record has McCartney on timpani, which is not his usual instrument, as on 'Mother Nature's Son' and 'Strawberry Fields Forever', with cowbell. George Martin played organ, as he also did on 'I Wanna Be Your Man' and 'Got to Get You into My Life'. It was chosen with Ringo in mind. Lennon wrote it with McCartney from that idea, and claimed the 'what do you see when you turn out the light' lines.
